According to the Russian Adoption Law and current practice in Russia, in order to adopt a healthy child:
- There are no specifically defined age requirements; however, most adoptive
parents are 25 to 55 years of age. Generally, the mother should be 45 years old or under in order to be eligible to adopt an infant. If both parents are over the age of 45, an older child might be referred. The age difference between the parent(s) and the child should not be more than 45 years.
- If married, a stable marriage should be evidenced in the home setting with the ability to financially care for the child.
- Singles and persons previously divorced are permitted to adopt. Singles should be at least 25 years of age to start the process as required by the CIS/INS, evidence above average income, and a plan to care for the child if the parent works outside the home.
- Parents who already have children are permitted to adopt.
- If any parent takes any anti-depressant, additional documents will be required prior to approval.
