EthiopiaYou can expect your trip to Brazil to be approximately 45 days. Both parents of a married couple should plan to stay in Brazil the entire time. Under rare circumstances, one parent may petition to return to the U.S. after about ten days, but it may not be granted.
When you arrive in Brazil, you can expect to be met by one of our representatives who will take you to your apartment. Because of the length of time, we try to arrange for adopting parents to stay in an apartment or similar housing which will be furnished with as many amenities from home that we can arrange. Our representative will spend a lot of time with you during the first few days getting you acquainted with the neighborhood and working with you on your Portuguese.
The child will be placed with you typically the day after your arrival. You will receive instructions on schedule, food and other necessities. After the first few days, our representative will be available as needed. During the course of your stay, a social worker from CEJAI will visit to see how everything is progressing. Understandably, the Brazilian adoption officials want to know that there is progress on a family unit.
After approximately 30 days the social worker will make her final visit and will prepare and forward a recommendation report to the CEJAI office. If the report is favorable, CEJAI will issue a certificate recommending the adoption and the attorney will file the adoption with the local courts. Next the final Adoption Decree will be prepared, a new birth certificate will be issued, and the attorney will secure a Brazilian passport for your child. You will then travel with your child to Rio de Janeiro and request your child's US visa at the US Consulate in Rio de Janeiro. After the Consulate issues your child's visa, you will return to the United States.
