Referral Process When Adopting from China

What everyone wants to know is: "How long will it take to adopt from China?"

We can provide some fairly specific estimates from the time you submit your completed and copied China dossier to our office. Some families complete their entire China dossier in as few as 60 days while other families may take four months or more. The amount of time from when we receive your completed China dossier until you receive a referral varies and is currently growing longer. Please visit the Hot News section of our website for China Referral Updates.

Despite what you may hear, no agency receives their referrals any faster than any other agency. Thankfully, the China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA) standardized the referral procedure and referrals are given in a chronological order based upon when the dossiers are submitted to them. Exceptions may be made for adoptions of children over 6 years of age, children with special needs, or if the adopting parents are of Chinese descent.

With your referral you will receive a couple of photographs and a medical report. You are then asked to review this information and accept your referral. Upon providing us written confirmation on the required CCAA form that you accept your referral; we anticipate you will travel in approximately six to eight weeks.

You can learn more about your trip to China on our China travel page or by speaking with our families who have traveled to China.
