I recently had the privilege of facilitating a Foster Mother Training Seminar in Guatemala. The seminar was a big success! It was such an honor to meet and talk with the women that care for our children. I learned much more from them than I could ever hope to impart to them.
It was a day long seminar at the Guatemala City Marriott. We covered a wide variety of topics, which are listed for you below. Many adopting families have shared advice and experience that we used in choosing topics for discussion at the seminar. Thank you for your input and please keep it up. It is invaluable.
We used a set of videos called "Building a Healthy Start," that were in original Spanish and were produced by the "I Am Your Child Foundation." The videos were narrated by well-known Latin celebrities, such as Gloria Esteban and others. After each video we had a brief discussion and activity period in which the foster mothers were encouraged to share what they learned. We did our best to make the discussion as interactive as possible. The foster mothers enjoyed sharing their experience and telling their stories.

Each foster mother received a certificate of completion and a small gift from FTIA.
Overall, we are very impressed with the quality of care that the children are receiving in our foster care program. Our attorneys have proven to be very particular and will take action immediately if a concern arises regarding the quality of care a child is receiving. It is our desire to continue to educate the foster mothers through similar activities. With each training the foster mothers have an opportunity to further their education and we have an opportunity to maintain a foster care program in which we can assure that children are receiving the best care possible.
